In late winter/early spring I explored the mountainous interior and undeveloped southern coast of “Europe’s Greenest Region” with the owners of South Philadelphia’s Abruzzese Trattoria, Le Virtú, Cathy Lee and Francis Cratil.

We visited one regional and three national parks, high pasture lands, pristine medieval villages, abandoned settlements and ruins. With a particular focus on trattorie, agriturismi and ristoranti, we were able to experience a vast range of the cuisine of Abruzzo’s farmers, shepherds, and fishermen, that which is honored at South Philly’s Le Virtú.

These photographs document my experiences in Italy’s remote, relatively unexplored Abruzzo region, beautiful landscapes; layers of time and tradition in the architecture, and daily rhythms and work of Abruzzo and its people.
