Fletcher Street is in North Philadelphia, where one unusual block stands out from the rest of the rows and rows of eerily quiet, mostly abandoned row homes. On this block there is a stable. A quiet, but lively and fun place, where people of all ages gather around the horses and have a good time. I went there hoping to ride. As I walked around the neighborhood, I reflected on the pros and cons of living in the city that I love so much, and the country, where I grew up and often miss. Anyway, I met Erin, the riding instructor, and she put me on Dollar, her 17 year old Quarter Horse stallion. Soon we were cantering, moving freely across an open field with the Philadelphia skyline resting beneath cloudy November skies.
